Henderson replaces injured Phillips

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been called up to replace the injured Kalvin Phillips in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Henderson, 32, was not in the original Three Lions squad named last week after missing his club’s last five games with a hamstring problem.

But the midfielder has now joined up with the rest of the squad at St George’s Park ahead of their Nations League double-header against Italy and Germany.

Manchester City enforcer Phillips withdrew last week with a shoulder injury that may require surgery.

Henderson, who has 69 caps, has played only once for his nation in 2022 — a 2-1 friendly win over Switzerland in March.

England head to the San Siro to face Euro 2020 final opponents Italy on Friday before hosting old foes Germany at Wembley on Monday.

Suarez on the move

Luis Suarez is set to leave Nacional in November only three months after re-signing for his boyhood club.

The striker, 35, returned to his first ever professional team in the summer after leaving Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguayan has performed well for the Montevideo outfit, scoring four goals in his first eight league games, but it has been revealed that he will become a free agent once again before the World Cup.

The club’s president Jose Fuentes told ESPN: “When the Uruguayan Championship ends, Suarez will leave, that’s how we arranged his deal.

“It’s what we agreed and he made a huge effort to come here.

“I say this to avoid generating fan expectations. Suarez is leaving. We’ve asked him, and he answered the same thing as before.”

Suarez, a 132-cap international for Uruguay, is in line to play in his fourth World Cup in Qatar this winter.
