Potter throws down the gauntlet

Graham Potter is confident Conor Gallagher can build on his debut goal for Chelsea.

The England midfielder climbed off the bench to drill home a sensational winner as the Blues battled back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory at Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

Gallagher, 22, did not celebrate having spent last season on loan at Selhurst Park but was mobbed his team-mates after the strike.

And Potter said: “I hope it’s the start of a very successful Chelsea career for Conor.

“He’s a young player who did very well at Crystal Palace last season and now it’s another step for him.

“I really like Conor. He’s a fantastic kid, first of all, who trains well every day and he’s desperate to do well.

“He’s desperate to play for Chelsea and he’s desperate to be successful here, so that’s a great starting point.

“Now it’s about finding the right balance for him to be in the team and for the players on the pitch to play to their optimal level on a regular basis.

“Regarding Conor as a person, though, he’s absolutely top.”

Boro axe Wilder

Middlesbrough have sacked Chris Wilder after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Coventry left them languishing in the Championship’s bottom three.

Wilder, 55, took charge at the Riverside in November 2021 following the club’s decision to part company with Neil Warnock.

But things have not gone to plan so far this season, with just two wins in 11 league games.

A brief statement published on Boro’s website said: “Middlesbrough have terminated the contract of manager Chris Wilder with immediate effect.

“Leo Percovich will take over first team affairs in the interim basis, assisted by Craig Liddle, Mark Tinkler and Lee Cattermole.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Chris and his staff for all their hard work over the past 11 months.”
