Williamson set to miss USA clash

England are set to be without Euro 2022-winning captain Leah Williamson for their friendlies against the USA and Czech Republic due to injury.

Lotte Wubben-Moy and Nikita Parris have called up as cover for the Arsenal defender and West Ham forward Lucy Parker, who has also withdrawn.

The Lionesses, who are European champions, face the 2019 World Cup winners at a sold-out Wembley on Friday before playing the Czech Republic next Tuesday in Brighton.

Skipper Williamson will undergo further assessment while Parker, 23, will be denied the chance to earn her first senior cap after returning to her club.

Boss Sarina Wiegman has drafted in two experienced Lionesses in their place, with both Arsenal defender Wubben-Moy, 23, and Manchester United forward Parris, 28, part of the squad who won the European Championship in the summer.

Rodgers reveals board’s backing

Brendan Rodgers insists he has the full support of the Leicester board after the Foxes picked up their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory over rivals Nottingham Forest.

James Maddison struck twice alongside Harvey Barnes and Patson Daka’s efforts to secure a comfortable win at the King Power Stadium on Monday night.

The Northern Irish manager was under intense pressure with his side sitting bottom of the Premier League after claiming just one point in seven games.

Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha had jetted in to watch his first game in six weeks, something that was seen as significant due to the pressure on the boss.

But Rodgers claimed it remained business as usual when meeting with the Foxes chief before kick-off.

He said: “I spoke to him beforehand. It’s always great to see Top [Srivaddhanaprabha]. He’s come before [this season] but of course more is made of it with you guys putting me under big pressure.

“He is always there and he’s been really supportive of me. They trust me in the work and that’s why I’m still in the job.

“They expect me to take the team out of it after what was a really difficult summer for us. The performance was co-ordinated and cohesive, with a desire, and we’ve got to build on it.

“All I’ve tried to do is focus on performances. There’s a process to it. I’ve got a big belief that when we play with intensity and coordination we can be a very good team. It’s been a difficult start for us but we’ve got to concentrate on the positive aspects.

“Any pressure that comes, I’ve said to them, that comes on to me and I can deal with that.”
