Mystified Marsch
Leeds boss Jesse Marsch admits he is struggling to pinpoint the reasons behind his side’s recent struggles.
The Whites slumped to another disappointing defeat yesterday when beaten 3-2 by Fulham at Elland Road, despite taking an early lead.
Marsch, 48, is now under huge pressure to turn things around and the American has resisted the urge to direct blame at his players.
He said: “It’s difficult to explain why we can’t capitalise and we give certain things away, but I’m not finger-pointing, I’m looking directly at myself.
“I’m taking responsibility. I’m trying to push them to understand how to get better and we have to demand that now for the next game.
“We have to do everything we can again to try to figure out how to get the win.”
Next up for the Yorkshire outfit is a tricky trip to Anfield on Saturday evening.
Bailey’s rallying call
Aston Villa need to make sure their emphatic defeat of Brentford was no flash in the pan, according to winger Leon Bailey.
The Jamaican, 25, opened the scoring in Villa’s 4-0 rout of Brentford yesterday — a first win in five for the East Midlands outfit, who sacked former boss Steven Gerrard on Thursday evening.
Bailey said: “I think it was brilliant in terms of how we played as a team, how we were there for each other.
“As we went back into the dressing room after the game, we saw a clip of the 89th minute where they had a corner, they countered and the whole team was sprinting behind the ball.
“And for us, that shows we’re a good team, we know what we’re about and that’s what we need to win games.
“Hopefully this can be the mentality moving forwards.”
Grecians grab Caldwell
League One side Exeter have confirmed the appointment of Gary Caldwell as their new manager.
The Scot, 40, takes the reins at St James Park after former boss Matt Taylor was headhunted by Championship outfit Rotherham earlier this month.
A 55-cap international in his playing days, Caldwell memorably guided Wigan to promotion from the third tier in 2015-16 but has since suffered mixed fortunes in charge of Chesterfield and Partick Thistle.
He inherits a Grecians side who sit eighth in League One and will be in the dugout for tomorrow night’s trip to Derby.
