Not over yet

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta insists that the Premier League title race is not over yet.

The Gunners were knocked off top spot in the table for the first time since February after Manchester City beat Fulham on Sunday and Pep Guardiola’s men still hold a game in hand on their rivals.

The top two met at the Etihad last week and it was the reigning champions who emerged victorious, putting them firmly in the driving seat ahead of the run-in.

But Arteta is refusing to give up and believes his side can still deliver the club’s first title since 2004.

He said: “We have achieved what it was difficult to achieve and we can still achieve the Premier League because there are five games to go and a lot of things are going to happen still.

“Now the title race is not in our hands anymore. What is in our hands is to try to win the games we have left and the rest is down to City.

“What we have to do is forget about what happened last week, learn from it and move on to the next game with a full tilt at home, with our people.

“I know what we were trying to do, what the objective was what we’ve been doing and we still have the nicest part of the season to play with five games to go. But when I still look at it, this is not over.”

Earn your place

Gareth Southgate has warned his England regulars that they must earn their place in his squad ahead of Euro 2024.

The Three Lions kicked off their qualifying campaign in March with wins over Italy and Ukraine, with Southgate mostly utilising those who featured at the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

Ahead of England’s next fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia in June, Southgate has issued a rallying call to those who are hoping to be involved at the end of the domestic season.

The 52-year-old explained: “If we’re going to have a look at players, they’ve got to earn the right.

“First and foremost, we’ve got to win the two matches and I think we’ve always given people opportunities at the right time.

“That’s why the team has had a youthful look over the years and it’s why new players have been able to come through and we’ve been able to evolve the team over a period of time.

“We’ll always look to give people opportunities, but they have to be earned.”
