Kai Havertz was delighted to get on the scoresheet as Chelsea beat Lille 2-0 last night — but he was quick to admit the European champions were far from their best.
With Blues boss Thomas Tuchel dropping Romelu Lukaku to the bench for the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie, Havertz returned to his false nine role to spearhead the attack at Stamford Bridge.
And the German opened the scoring after just eight minutes, with Christian Pulisic adding a second in the 63rd minute.
Havertz, 22, said: “We didn’t play our best football. It was hard.
“We could not get the aggression on the pitch we have had the last three weeks, so it was hard, but we won 2-0 in the end and that’s the most important thing.
“We have a lot of good strikers. It’s good to have a change to not make it easy for the opponents. It worked well but I enjoy every position.”
Klopp praises Diaz
Jurgen Klopp could not be happier with the impact Luis Diaz has made since joining Liverpool from Porto last month.
The Reds saw off competition from Tottenham to snap up the Colombian winger for an initial fee of £37.5million.
Diaz, 25, made his debut for the Merseysiders in the in the 3-1 FA Cup win over Cardiff earlier this month and netted his first goal for the club as Norwich were beaten by the same scoreline last Saturday.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s Premier League game with Leeds, Klopp said: “We wanted Diaz because we saw him playing and we saw it was easy to fit him in with all the things he is doing.
“He is a really talented player with an incredible work-rate. I am really happy with what he is delivering now.”
