Liverpool can still catch City
Danny Murphy believes Liverpool have what it takes to catch runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola’s men all but wrapped up the title in many people’s eyes by beating Chelsea 1-0 at the Etihad on Saturday.
Liverpool have a game in hand on the champions but are still a whopping 11 points adrift in second place.
Yet Murphy refuses to write off his former club’s chances of doing the seemingly impossible.
The BBC pundit, 44, said: “Right now, catching City looks extremely unlikely but then Jurgen Klopp’s side have already beaten the odds to triumph a few times in recent years.
“Although it is going to take an absolutely unbelievable effort for them to stop City retaining their crown, there are a few reasons I would not write the Reds off yet.
“We know this Liverpool team can go on the kind of long winning run they need now. They did it in 2018-19 when they took City to the last day of the season, then did it again to win the title in 2019-20.
“There has been a resilience about Liverpool under Klopp for a few years now and they have got the trophies to prove it. They won’t be giving up yet.”
Tuchel proud of his squad
Defeat at the Etihad may have effectively ended Chelsea’s title hopes — but Thomas Tuchel remains proud of his squad.
The European champions are 13 points behind City and now find themselves looking over their shoulders at the likes of West Ham and Arsenal, who are fourth and fifth in the table respectively.
Yet while the Blues have not won in the Premier League since a 3-1 success at Aston Villa on Boxing Day, Tuchel is fully behind his players.
He said: “I love the ambition, I love the attitude and I love the hunger with which we are playing.
“We are still brave and we are still up for a good fight and you can trust anybody you put on the pitch. It is a pleasure to be on the sideline.”
Tuchel has seen coronavirus and injuries decimate his squad this season but the Blues have yet to be granted a postponement.
And the German, 48, cannot wait to have a full complement of players once again. He added: “I think we just need our whole squad.
“I’ve said it many times, key players are key players because they are key in everything they do and behave.
“We need everybody and we struggle from long-term injuries, we struggle from coronavirus. But still we push ourselves and still we will not make a big thing of it. It is just to explain the situation.”
Sarr still has faith
Malang Sarr refuses to throw in the towel on Chelsea’s hopes of pipping City to league glory.
The centre-back, 22, impressed at the Etihad but was helpless as Kevin De Bruyne bagged the only goal of the game.
And despite what could well prove to be a knockout blow, Sarr is determined to keep fighting.
He said: “The result will make it harder. But it was not a final, there are still lots of games left and points to fight for. The league is very long.
“I have confidence in the group and the capacity of our team. I have no doubt we will battle until the end. It’s really possible we can recover ground.”
