Football to have independent regulator
The Government says it will introduce an independent regulator in English football following recommendations made in a fan-led review into the game.
The regulator will have power to sanction English clubs who break financial and other rules.
A more stringent owners and directors’ test will also be introduced and legislation will be passed to give fans more of a say in the running of their clubs.
The review was launched following a number of high-profile crises in the sport, including the failed breakaway European Super League and the collapse of Bury.
Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Nadine Dorries tweeted: “Today we have endorsed every single one of the ten strategic recommendations set out in the fan-led review of football.
“That means major reform of football in England recommended by fans, for fans.”
MP Tracey Crouch, who chaired the fan-led review published last November, described the plans as a “big step forward” but questioned the lack of timeframe specified for when the changes will be implemented.
Livramento facing long spell out
Southampton right-back Tino Livramento is facing a lengthy period on the sidelines after suffering a “serious” injury against Brighton, according to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The 19-year-old was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen after a challenge by Seagulls midfielder Enock Mwepu in their 2-2 draw on Sunday.
And while there is no confirmed news of his absence as of yet, the Austrian boss admitted he was fearing the worst.
On the extent of the injury, Hasenhuttl said: “We are not sure yet, but it does not look good.
“He’s very frustrated because he knows it could be a long break out. He will come back stronger.”
The England Under-21s international has impressed since joining Saints from Chelsea for £5million last summer, making 32 appearances and scoring one goal.
Jackson: Wolves win a big lift
Interim Burnley manager Mike Jackson says moving out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Wolves offers his players a big lift in their bid for Premier League survival.
Matej Vydra’s 62nd-minute strike secured a narrow victory for the Clarets to lift them above Everton into 17th place, where they stayed after the Toffees lost 2-0 against Liverpool.
It means Burnley have collected seven points in three games since Under-23s boss Jackson took over the hotseat from Sean Dyche.
After the game, Jackson said: “It was full of everything that Burnley is about. The character of the group and the fans is key, that togetherness.
“Managers search around for team spirit. We’ve got that and we need to bottle and harness it.
“I think it’ll be a big lift to the group [moving out of the relegation zone] if, fingers crossed, it can stay that way.
“Getting these results, I think psychologically for the group, what they’ve achieved this week will help them, will bring them together even more.”
