Arteta extends Arsenal stay
Mikel Arteta has signed a new deal at Arsenal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
The 40-year-old Spaniard has guided the Gunners within touching distance of a first top-four finish in six years this term, which would in turn secure Champions League qualification.
Arteta said: “I’m excited, grateful and really, really happy today.
“When I spoke to Josh [Kroenke], he could see the club at the same point and he wanted to take the club the way I wanted to do it.
“So everything that he’s said and that Stan [Kroenke] has said when I’ve been together with both of them, they’ve always delivered.
“We want to take the club to the next level and to compete really with the top teams. In order to do that, we have to be playing in the Champions League.
“We have to be able to evolve the team, improve our players, improve all departments, generate even more connection with our fans, improve the atmosphere at the Emirates, be able to recruit top, top talent and the best people for this club to drive this project to that level.”
The Gunners also confirmed their women’s manager Jonas Eidevall has reached an agreement on a new two-year contract.
Eidevall’s side could still snatch the WSL title if they better the result of leaders Chelsea in the season’s final round of fixtures this weekend.
Arteta meanwhile will hope to mastermind victory at home to Leeds on Sunday afternoon.
Lundstram revels in ‘greatest night’
Rangers matchwinner John Lundstram admitted his side’s stunning Europa League semi-final victory over RB Leipzig is the greatest achievement of his career.
The former Sheffield United midfielder, 28, smashed home in the final 10 minutes to seal a remarkable 3-2 aggregate victory over the Bundesliga outfit last night.
The famous victory booked the Gers a place in the Seville showpiece in 12 days’ time, where they will face another German opponent in Eintracht Frankfurt who defeated West Ham 3-1 on aggregate.
Lundstram said: “I came in with a good feeling. Look at the place! But to actually go out and do it, I can’t put it into words.
“We’ve been through so many ups and downs this season but to come through it and reach a Europa League final, wow.
“It’s my best night by a country mile.”
Lifting the trophy on May 18 would also earn Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men a spot in next year’s Champions League group stage.
