Marsch: Haaland deal makes City even slicker
Leeds boss Jesse Marsch wishes Erling Haaland would return to his birthplace in his next move — but has backed the Norwegian star to shine at Manchester City.
Scoring sensation Haaland, 21, is set to join Pep Guardiola’s Citizens this summer with a £64million deal expected to be announced soon.
His father Alf-Inge played for both City and Leeds during his playing days and Whites boss Marsch has jokingly questioned the youngster’s choice of destination.
He said: “I wish he was coming home to Leeds, his birthplace! But I understand the decision to go to Manchester City.
“Erling Haaland is destined to be one of the best players in the world. It’s his quality but also his talent.
“He can play in any style but it makes Man City, one of, if not the best team in the world, even better. I always wish the best for Erling, he’s an incredible human being.”
Marsch’s men host Chelsea in a colossal clash tomorrow evening having slipped into the Premier League relegation zone over the weekend.
Toffees job not done yet
Frank Lampard only has eyes for Everton’s results ahead of another crucial couple of days in the fight for top-flight survival.
The Toffees travel to relegated Watford on Wednesday evening hunting a third straight win, while fellow strugglers Leeds face a tough trip to Chelsea.
Yet Lampard insists he has no interest in what happens at his former stamping ground of Stamford Bridge — only that his players do their job at Vicarage Road.
Lampard said: “As much as we talk about the things around us, tomorrow night we have to approach it in the right way.
“What matters is we keep doing the things that have helped us perform in this recent run of games. We have always performed well at Goodison. Going away has been the problem.
“Now there’s a good feeling in the group with back-to-back wins, which was important for us. All the players need to do is continue with the mindset of the moment.”
Neil: Sunderland proved critics wrong
Sunderland boss Alex Neil says his side silenced their doubters by seeing off Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 on aggregate to reach the League One play-off final.
Patrick Roberts’ injury-time strike at Hillsborough proved pivotal in a tight encounter, booking the Black Cats a showdown with Wycombe at Wembley on Saturday, May 21.
Victory would end a four-year stay in the third tier for Wearside giants and ex-Preston manager Neil, 40, is determined to steer his side over the line.
Speaking at full-time, Neil said: “I was so pleased for the players tonight because they do get written off.
“I can’t remember how many people were tipping Sheffield Wednesday to be favourites, so they can put that in their pipe, can’t they?
“We’ve been questioned, we’re always questioned — can Sunderland do it in the play-offs, and all this sort of palaver. But at the end of the day we deserve it, we’ve done the business.”
Their last play-off final ended in heartbreak back in 2018-19 when Patrick Bauer’s 94th-minute winner earned Charlton a dramatic 2-1 victory under the arch.
It has been a long road back to this point and Neil knows the biggest challenge of all is still to come.
He added: “Although we are happy and we’re pleased and we’ve celebrated tonight, soon we have have to get our minds on the next one.”
