Vieira calm on Zaha contract talks
Patrick Vieira is not losing any sleep over contract talks with Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha.
Zaha, 29, scored the winner in the Eagles’ 2-1 triumph over Wolves last night but his future at Selhurst Park remains uncertain.
The Ivory Coast international has a deal that expires next summer and has not yet shown any signs of penning new terms.
However, Palace boss Vieira is not concerned by the lack of talks over an extension and is focused on the present rather than the future.
Speaking after last night’s win, he said: “Wilfried knows what the club thinks about him and we know what he thinks about the club.
“There will be a discussion taking place but for myself and for the club what is important is for him to play at this level and to be consistent and to help those young players around him to grow and we’ll see what will happen.
“When Wilfried has a good day I would say the team has a good day. He’s an important player on and off the field, he’s got the experience and today he was really good in possession, out of possession, he worked really hard.”
Man arrested after firework thrown in EFL Trophy
A man has been arrested after throwing a firework on to the pitch in last night’s Papa John’s Trophy tie between Barrow and Carlisle.
Footage clearly shows the object being thrown from the home end and Cumbria Police later confirmed that the suspect had been arrested and removed from the stadium.
The incident saw the match suspended for 17 minutes after the firework landed in the Carlisle penalty box and exploded, causing most fans to be moved to another section of the stadium.
In a short statement, the police said: “Working alongside the club, Cumbria Police have now arrested one male in relation to the firework thrown on the pitch in the early stages of the match.
“I remind you, this is an offence and is extremely dangerous and will not be tolerated.”
The hosts went on to win the game 2-0, thanks to second-half goals from Josh Kay and Sam Foley.
