Marc of a star
Jurgen Klopp admits he cannot help but admire Marcus Rashford’s blistering form.
Rashford, 25, and his Manchester United team-mates will head to Anfield on a high on Sunday after lifting the Carabao Cup last weekend and booking their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals in midweek.
The England striker has netted 25 goals for United this season after enduring a frustrating couple of campaigns at Old Trafford.
And Klopp said: “It is difficult, pretty much impossible, to be positive about something at Manchester United as Liverpool manager for seven-and-a-half years but I am really happy for Rashford.
“He had a really difficult last year, was not performing at the level he is able to, and I knew this would change again. Now he is playing incredibly.
“His speed, technique, how calm he is in front of goal, he scores worldies, he scores the simple ones.”
Leave me out of it
Eddie Howe insists he cannot afford to become embroiled in a new row over Newcastle’s ownership.
The club have been thrust into the spotlight once again after court papers filed in the United States claimed chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan is a minister of the Saudi Arabian government.
That revelation has raised questions over the Premier League’s confirmation that “legally-binding assurances” of the separation between the state and its Public Investment Fund, of which Al-Rumayyan is governor, had been received.
Asked about the latest development, Toon boss Howe said: “For me, my job is training the players, trying to get them in the best physical, mental, tactical condition to win the game.
“The minute I deviate from that is the minute I go into dangerous waters for me and I waste energy in areas that don’t help the players.
“That’s not my area, I don’t want it to be my area. I want to concentrate on how I can improve the team.”
After losing the Carabao Cup final last weekend, Newcastle head to the Etihad tomorrow to face Premier League champions Manchester City.
Training ground emergency
Birmingham have been forced to close their Wast Hills Training Ground following a fire early this morning — disrupting preparations for tomorrow’s Championship match at Wigan.
An official statement said: “The club can confirm that Wast Hills training ground has suffered damage as a result of a fire.
“Hereford and Worcester Fire Service attended the scene and remain on site following the discovery during the early hours of Friday, March 3. No one was injured.
“Staff and players have been contacted and the facility remains closed until further notice. The club will continue to liaise with the emergency services and will make no further comment at this time.”
