Saints call for action

Southampton want action from social media platforms after calling in police over racist abuse aimed at Kyle Walker-Peters.

The full-back, 25, was targeted with a series of offensive replies, including monkey emojis, to his latest Instagram post following yesterday’s goalless draw at Manchester United.

One racist term was used in reference to United substitute Alejandro Garnacho, who was left writhing in pain after a challenge by Walker-Peters during the Premier League clash.

The Saints said: “In February 2021, the club made a statement about one of our young players receiving abhorrent racial abuse following a match against Manchester United.

“More than two years on, we find ourselves in the exact same position — disgusted and disappointed in the behaviour of those online who lower themselves to abusing players for the colour of their skin.

“What is equally frustrating is the lack of meaningful action in those two years from the social media platforms who allow such hatred to breed and fester.

“As we have said before, Southampton fight every day to remove such people from our sport and our community in order to protect our players, our staff, Southampton fans and those football supporters around the world who recognise and celebrate the diversity that makes football special.

“We have forwarded the messages concerned to Hampshire Police in keeping with our normal processes when dealing with these cases.

“We have also reported these posts to the social media platforms involved.

“We can only hope that they finally pay attention to what continues to be a major problem and that we do not find ourselves repeating these words in another two years’ time.”

Back on the box

Gary Lineker’s first assignment back on the BBC will be to present live coverage of Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final between Manchester City and Burnley.

The Beeb confirmed Lineker’s reinstatement to Match of the Day this morning after the former England striker was told to step back from hosting the show last week in a row over impartiality.

With the dispute now resolved, a BBC Sport spokesperson confirmed Lineker, 62, would front the FA Cup coverage as originally planned.

Mark Chapman is due to host the Match of the Day highlights show on Saturday night.

Gunn’s Scot a chance

Norwich keeper Angus Gunn has switched allegiance from England to Scotland.

Gunn, whose father Bryan won six caps for Scotland in the 1990s, is eligible for both nations and played for England through the age groups up to Under-21s level.

But he has never been capped at full international level, giving Steve Clarke the chance to persuade him to commit to Scotland ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Cyprus and Spain later this month.

Gunn, 27, said: “I had a meeting with the manager a couple of months ago. I’ve spoken to him a few times and I’ve decided to change allegiances.

“I’m available for the squad. It’s exciting times for me.”

Palace suspensions

Boss Dean Davenport is reportedly one of three members of Crystal Palace women’s staff to have been suspended pending an investigation.

It is understood the trio’s conduct is being scrutinised after a complaint was raised.

First-team coach Mike Lowne was listed as head coach for yesterday’s 1-0 win at Sheffield United and a statement from the club said: “Three members of staff at Palace Women have been suspended, pending an investigation.

“We can’t comment further while it is ongoing.”

Davenport has been involved with Palace for 19 years, with 10 as manager. The club are currently sixth in the Women’s Championship.
