Proud Gallagher thrilled in Salzburg
Conor Gallagher hailed a “great night” for Chelsea as they booked their spot in the Champions League knockout stages.
The young midfielder made his full debut in the tournament for the Blues they beat FC Salzburg 2-1 thanks to Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz’s stunning strikes either side of Junior Adamu’s equaliser.
After dominating the first half, Graham Potter’s side were made to dig in as they eventually confirmed their place at the top of Group E.
Gallagher said: “That was a great night for us and we’re really happy to get through.
“It was a tough game, as we knew it would be but everyone stuck to their tasks, we gave our all and to get the three points at a place like this is massive for us.
“It was a proud moment for me to make my first start in the Champions League and I just wanted to give a good account of myself.
“I wanted to put in a good performance and help the team get the win, so I’m really pleased with how it went.
“We’re taking things game by game, each match is important and we’ve got a lot of them. Everybody just needs to be ready, which we are and hopefully we can carry on the form that we are in.”
Marsch on borrowed time
USA legend Alexi Lalas believes Jesse Marsch is in the final throes of his time as Leeds head coach.
Marsch, 48, is under increasing pressure after a dismal run of form saw the Whites pick up just two points from eight games.
They have dropped into the relegation zone ahead of a tough trip to Liverpool on Saturday evening and fans were quick to voice their discontent following a 3-1 defeat at home to Fulham.
He said: “Jesse Marsch’s job is to keep this team up this year. A team like Fulham, you at least want to go get a point.
“When it comes to Leeds right now and Jesse Marsch, he is under pressure and rightfully so.
“Not because he is an American coach, but because he is a coach in a situation where they are trying to get somebody that cane steady the ship and keep them in the league.
“I don’t know if and when they were to pull the plug but the shouts when it comes to fans out there have gotten loud.
“This could be the last week that we see Jesse Marsch. Even though Liverpool is not Liverpool of old, it’s still Liverpool.”
