Anfield extension
Liverpool have asked the Premier League to start their 2023-24 campaign with an away fixture so that redevelopment work at Anfield can be completed.
The Reds will add 7,000 seats to their iconic ground via their new Anfield Road stand, taking the total capacity to around 61,000.
Work is set to be completed in time for the new season kicking off, but a test event must be held before any matches take place to secure the relevant safety certificates.
The club’s vice president of stadium operations Paul Cuttill said: “We’ve put in the request [for an away game], but we haven’t had it confirmed yet by the Premier League.
“If it is confirmed, we’ll be looking at around August 19 for our first home game of the new season to be played here with the new Anfield Road stand open.
“It’s been incredibly challenging but we’re on time and we’re on budget.”
Raise a glass
Ex-NFL star JJ Watt toasted his investment in Championship winners Burnley with a pub crawl through the town centre.
Three-time Defensive Player of the Year Watt, 34, bought a minority stake in the Clarets last week alongside his wife, former USA international footballer Kealia.
And keen to meet some of the club’s supporters in the flesh, Watt opted to sample some of the Lancashire location’s most popular watering holes.
He explained: “I’ve learned that the history, tradition and supporters, it’s all about respecting and honouring that.
“You never want to come in and try and do something that’s not true to who the club is and what we’re trying to do is show people what real Burnley is about.
“I did a pub crawl yesterday on my way to the stadium. I started at the Royal Dyche, worked my way down to Vintage Clarets and all my way up to Turf Moor.
“Just getting to know the supporters, I want to earn their trust by showing them how much we care and how passionate we are.
“It’s research, I’m doing research and lots of pints of Guinness along the way.”
Dad’s in trouble
Alfie Haaland was removed from his seat at the Bernabeu after celebrating Manchester City’s equaliser against Real Madrid last night.
Kevin De Bruyne’s rocket pulled City level midway through the second half of their Champions League semi-final first leg in the Spanish capital, cancelling out Vinicius Jr’s impressive opener.
It was a strike that ex-City midfielder Haaland — the father of Erling — greeted enthusiastically, irritating home fans to the point where he was asked by security staff to depart the scene.
After video footage emerged of the incident, Haaland tweeted: “Ok. RM [Real Madrid] was not happy we were celebrating KDB [Kevin De Bruyne] goal.
“Other than that, we had to move because RM fans were not happy with 1-1.”
