History beckons

Luka Modric is relishing Real Madrid’s push for European glory as they chase a sixth Champions League trophy in 10 years.

Holders Real head to Manchester City tonight with their semi-final finely poised at 1-1.

And Modric, a five-time winner of European football’s elite competition, has been remembering what former coach Zinedine Zidane told the team before their 2018 final triumph against Liverpool.

The playmaker, 37, said: “I still remember the video before Kyiv, with Zizou talking about creating a dynasty. It gives you an extra motivation.

“Knowing you are close to touching another final, you want to give everything. It can give you a bit extra at moments in the game.

“We are close to doing something historic.”

Future concern

Eddie Howe hopes his brush with danger can help avoid a “tragedy” on a football pitch.

The Newcastle boss, 45, was confronted in his technical area by a fan — who has since been banned from Elland Road for life and charged with assault — during last Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw at Leeds.

Asked about the incident ahead of Thursday night’s clash with Brighton, he said: “The concern for me is the future.

“I just hope that incident can help the authorities and whoever is concerned with the security and safety of the players and staff.

“If it does make a little change or someone to think how we can improve things, it will have been a really worthwhile episode because I’d hate to see a tragedy on a football pitch that could have been avoided.”
