Sanchez: I love beating Spurs
Alexis Sanchez admits he has extra motivation to knock Tottenham out of the Champions League with Marseille tonight.
The ex-Arsenal striker only lost once in seven games against Spurs as a Gunner, scoring twice for his former club in North London derbies.
If Marseille win tonight, they will qualify and knock their visitors out in the process, while any other result would see Antonio Conte’s side through.
And as one of four players with Arsenal experience, alongside Matteo Guendouzi, Nuno Tavares and Sead Kolasinac, Sanchez will take more pleasure than most if they succeed.
Sanchez said: “I have great affection for Arsenal from my time there. I have some great memories with everyone at the club, especially the fans.
“Beating Spurs every time was a great joy. It was very special and those are memories that I hold dear to my heart.”
The 33-year-old added: “Every player has motivation to play and win. We want to bring the victory back. We want to progress and are working to do so.
“I’m here to be victorious for the team, playing for the fans, and the atmosphere drives us on. We’re at home, so we have the capabilities to do it.”
United’s World Cup plans
Manchester United have revealed their plans for the World Cup break by announcing a friendly with LaLiga side Cadiz.
The Red Devils have four games before the six-week break begins on November 14 but Erik ten Hag has confirmed those not at the tournament will head out to Spain for a training camp.
He said: “It’s a strange season. It’s not like usual as we have a World Cup but also players will stay behind.
“We have to train them during those six weeks and we have to give them the right programme so they stay in the right fitness levels, but also they stay in the right shape and also in the team style.
“We made a programme to do that, as optimum as possible. So, we will train here [at Carrington] for one week, or eight or nine days, and then we will have a short break. Then we will train and go to Spain for a training camp for one week.
“We have good opponents over there so we can get the game practice in as well.
“Then we will return, ready for the second stage of the season, I would say, but a long stage, longer than usual.”
United face Real Sociedad, Aston Villa twice and Fulham before the World Cup then return to action against Nottingham Forest on December 27, with the Cadiz friendly on December 7.
Rangers out to avoid unwanted history
Rangers face Ajax in their final Group A game looking for their first points of a difficult campaign.
No Scottish side have ever lost six matches in a single Champions League or European Cup season — a record Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be desperate to avoid.
Liverpool, Napoli and the Dutch giants have proven too strong for the Gers, who finished second in the Scottish Premiership last term.
But he conceded they cannot compete with Ajax on the pitch and after a 4-0 defeat in Amsterdam, the Dutch boss is leaning heavily on the Ibrox atmosphere to get them going.
Van Bronckhorst says: “It would be disappointing not to get any points. We’re still not at the same level as Ajax but we are developing.
“That’s the way it is. The players overall are from a higher level, their budget is high.
“We cannot compare ourselves with Ajax, but we can compete with them on the day and especially at Ibrox.”
