Cont make any promises
Antonio Conte has told Tottenham fans that he is still a long way away from bringing trophies to North London.
The Italian tactician, 53, saw his side fall to a 2-1 home defeat against Liverpool yesterday, leaving them eight points adrift of Premier League leaders and bitter rivals Arsenal.
Conte told reporters in the aftermath: “I can’t promise in this moment to win trophies for our fans because in this moment we are far away from doing it.
“Then if it happens in domestic league, then it would be super. I repeat, I continue to ask for time and patience, because I have the experience to tell that we are far from other teams that are used to winning and have squads strong to win.”
The former Chelsea boss, who has never spent more than three seasons at a single club in his managerial career, also hinted that a mutual parting of ways could occur next summer if club chiefs did not share his patient outlook.
He added: “If we understand this together, it would be good. Otherwise, I repeat, everybody wants to win, I am the first that wants to win but we need time and patience.
“If everybody knows we have time and patience, it is okay. Otherwise, I think we continue this season and we will see at the end what happens.”
Up for the cup
Eddie Howe will not let a looming Super Sunday showdown with Chelsea stop him from naming a strong Newcastle team for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Crystal Palace.
The Magpies soared up to third in the Premier League thanks to a 4-1 thrashing of Southampton yesterday, with Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl since being relieved of his duties.
Excitement is building on Tyneside regarding potential continental qualification, but the ex-Bournemouth boss has no intention of playing a significantly weakened side against the Eagles.
Howe said: “I think we’ll see what the state of the players is in terms of injuries. It was another big, physical effort [against Southampton].
“I know we have Chelsea right around the corner, so I will pick a team to try and win the game for sure.
“There will be no part of me that wants to go into that game and not progress.”
The domestic cup is one that the Toon have remarkably never tasted success in, with their last FA Cup triumph coming back in 1956.
Seeing red
Referee Facundo Tello warmed up for his World Cup officiating duties by dishing out TEN red cards in Argentina’s Champions Trophy final on Sunday night.
Tempers flared in the clash between Racing Club and Boca Juniors after Racing midfielder Carlos Alcaraz opted to excessively celebrate his late match-winning goal in front of opposition supporters.
The move infuriated Boca, prompting a mass brawl which eventually resulted in five of their players being dismissed as well as goalscorer Alcaraz and his team-mate Jonathan Galvan.
Tello — who is one of two Argentinian referees heading to Qatar this month — had already sent off three players earlier in the fiery contest.
