Lindelof hails Garnacho’s impact
Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof hailed teenager Alejandro Garnacho after he struck the Red Devils’ last-gasp winner at Fulham.
The 18-year-old calmly slotted the ball beyond Bernd Leno to give United a 2-1 win in the final Premier League game before the World Cup break.
It was Garnacho’s first top-flight goal and Lindelof praised the impact of the substitute who came on for the final 18 minutes.
Swedish centre-back Lindelof, 28, said: “I think he’s been great in the past couple of weeks when he’s got his chances to play and once again, he showed his qualities.
“He came on and made a difference and that’s exactly what we need from all the players.
“If you’re not playing, you have to come in and make a difference and that’s what he did.
“It was a great, great game, but obviously it was a tough game. We controlled the game quite well in the first half, but in the second half we lost a few balls, and they created a few chances.
“But we fought until the end and managed to get the goal. [It is] just fantastic to get the three points.”
Garnacho has made eight first-team appearances in all competitions this term and made his full league debut in the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa earlier this month.
Maguire pick a ‘gamble’ for Southgate
Former England captain Alan Shearer believes it would be a “huge, huge gamble” for Gareth Southgate to play Harry Maguire at the World Cup.
Maguire, 29, is expected to start at centre-back for the Three Lions against Iran a week today despite playing just four Premier League games for United this term.
A Southgate stalwart, the defender was a key part of the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 squads, but a torrid loss of form over the past 12 months means his spot has been heavily questioned.
Shearer, 52, said: “Harry Maguire has done incredibly well for England over recent tournaments and we know Gareth likes to go to his favourites who have served him well in the past, and Harry Maguire has.
“But if you’re not playing club football, it’s a huge, huge gamble and a huge ask of the individual to be thrown into a World Cup, the biggest tournament ever, without having any games behind you.”
Southgate has plenty of alternative options at centre-back with John Stones, Eric Dier, Conor Coady and Ben White all in the squad.
Ex-England and Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is also wary of picking Maguire for the opening game.
Carragher, 44, said: “I think before the No1 pick would always be Harry Maguire for Gareth Southgate, and what he’s done in tournaments for England.
“But on the back of what happened in the last internationals, how it’s gone for him at Manchester United, I think it’s really difficult to pick him.”
