Messi and Argentina squad to auction World Cup shirts

Lionel Messi and the rest of the Argentina World Cup squad will be auctioning their match-worn shirts from the upcoming tournament to football fans across the globe.

The Argentina Football Association have partnered with the company behind the Momento Market app to allow fans to bid on player’s shirts throughout the competition.

This could include the shirt Messi will wear in his final World Cup appearance, with the Paris Saint-Germain forward approaching retirement and not likely to feature at the 2026 edition.

Auctions will open on the Momento Market app at kick-off of each game that Argentina compete in and there will be a period of extended bidding after the match.

Successful bidders will receive the shirt, alongside a digital Certificate of Authenticity that includes a unique identifier that tracks back to an authentication label affixed to the associated jersey.

Messi is set to captain his nation and look to emulate the great Diego Maradona — the last Argentine to lift the World Cup trophy back in 1986.

La Albiceleste face Saudi Arabia on November 22, before later Group C clashes with Mexico and Poland.

Cahill announces retirement

Former Chelsea and England centre-back Gary Cahill has announced his retirement from football.

Cahill, 36, made 394 Premier League appearances and won the title twice during his stint with the Blues, as well as the Champions League.

The 6ft 3in defender made 61 appearances for his country and featured at two World Cup tournaments.

In a statement posted to his social media pages, he said: “Football is a game that has given me so much enjoyment and success and as I make the decision to hang up my boots I can honestly say I gave it everything I had.

“I’ve achieved things I once dreamt of, from amazing highs like winning the Champions League and Premier League, to the privilege of captaining my country and Chelse in an FA Cup winning team will remain with me forever.

“A special thank you must go to my amazing family who have supported me and been there every step of the way. I now have the opportunity to spend some quality time with them which is something I am looking forward to.

“Beyond that, football will always be part of who I am and what I love so this is just the end of this chapter. For me it is important to look forwards not backwards as a new chapter in my life begins.”

Carew jailed for 14 months

Ex-Aston Villa and Norway striker John Carew has been jailed for 14 months for tax evasion after unintentionally failing to disclose income and assets abroad to Norwegian authorities.

Carew, 43, has also been hit with a fine of £45,353 for tax fraud and his sentence could have been doubled if he had acted knowingly.

In a 38-page judgement, the court concluded that Carew acted ‘grossly negligently’ but believes that it cannot be proven beyond reasonable doubt that he provided incorrect information intentionally.

The prosecution claimed the former Premier League star had plenty of opportunity to correct information given to the authorities but chose not to.

Now, the 91-cap international will face punishment in his home country where he was voted Norwegian Player of the Year three times.

Hazard frustrated at Madrid

Eden Hazard has expressed his frustration at the lack of playing time he is receiving at Real Madrid.

Hazard, 31, has made six appearances for the LaLiga champions this season and the Belgian international has only started twice.

Despite his struggles at Los Blancos, the winger has been included as part of Belgium’s squad travelling to Qatar.

Hazard said: “I would be lying if I said that it is positive. I do not play. I train. I hardly missed a session.

“I have no criticism for the coach [Carlo Ancelotti]. He gave his explanations in a press conference. It is difficult for him to always answer the same questions.

“He asked me to do my best. I try. I am at a dead end. I want to play more. I accept this situation. I try to show every day in training that I can give more, that I still have good things to give.

“I try to keep smiling. Sometimes there are mornings when it is more difficult. When I think I’m playing and I’m not. It’s up to me to adapt.”

Roberto Martinez is likely to start Hazard in Belgium’s opener against Canada on November 23, before the Red Devils take on fellow Group F hopefuls Morocco and Croatia.

James owes Wales career to his late father

Daniel James has said that he owes his position in Wales’ World Cup squad to his late father Kevan.

The Fulham winger lost his father back in May 2019 just as he was on the verge of joining Manchester United from Swansea.

He said: “It’s down to him that I’m playing here today.

“He took me to North Wales camp when I was 12 years old. He emailed the person there to say I was eligible to play for Wales.

“I got picked up at Swansea when I was 15 playing for Wales against Poland. I wouldn’t have played that game, and may not have been at Swansea and end up going to a World Cup but for him.

“When I scored on my debut against Slovakia he was there, and I’m so glad that before he passed away he got to see me play for Wales.”
