FA investigate Emirates flare-up

The FA are investigating after Arsenal and Liverpool’s players clashed during the entertaining five-goal thriller at the Emirates.

Angered at the decision to award the Gunners a penalty for Thiago Alcantara’s foul on Gabriel Jesus, Jordan Henderson was seen squaring up to Gabriel before clashing with Granit Xhaka.

Both Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp were spoken to by referee Michael Oliver before Bukayo Saka was allowed to take penaly, which he scored to put Arsenal 3-2 up.

The FA said: “We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. We are in dialogue with the match officials.”

It is reported that Oliver spoke to both bosses again after the match, though Arteta insisted that it should be left on the pitch.

The Spaniard said: “It was an incident that happened. Whatever happens on that pitch stays on that pitch.”

Klopp added that he was “not allowed” to comment on whatever was said, though he did question the penalty decision.

He said: “If there was contact — and I’m not sure there was — it might have been soft contact.

“But the player [Jesus] was on both feet and then down. That’s an indication that something might have been made up.”

While Arsenal returned to the top of the league with the win, Liverpool sit 10th after a frustrating start to their title challenge.

Van Dijk: We’re short of confidence

Virgil van Dijk has conceded that confidence is lacking after Liverpool’s defeat at leaders Arsenal.

The Reds have only won twice in the Premier League this term and are 14 points behind the Gunners already.

Another title challenge looks unlikely for Jurgen Klopp’s side and Van Dijk, 31, admitted that a lack of belief may be present.

The Dutch defender said: “Confidence is definitely a thing that plays a part.

“You know, we are all human beings and sometimes you need a bit of confidence in certain moments and also if your confidence is not as high it is not helping in certain situations.

“As I said before, every human being whatever job, whatever situation, you need a little bit of confidence to perform in the highest level.

“If you’re not winning regular like we are used to then confidence is creeping away, but we know that it can turn around like that as well.

“We know we have to work and we have to work hard. That’s the only thing to do and the only way forward.”

Baggies sack Bruce

Steve Bruce has been sacked by West Brom after just eight months in charge with the club languishing in the Championship bottom three.

Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Luton means the Baggies have only won one of their 13 league fixtures this term.

They sit 22nd in the league with 11 points and fans at the Hawthorns were quick to voice their displeasure at the weekend.

The club said: “West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with manager Steve Bruce.

“Backroom staff Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Alex Bruce have also left The Hawthorns.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Steve Bruce and his coaching staff for their efforts since arriving in February.

“Under-21s coach Richard Beale will oversee first-team affairs on an interim basis, assisted by James Morrison and Gary Walsh.”

The Baggies visit high-flying Reading in their next game on Saturday.
