Result is all that counts

Alan Shearer insists England’s dismal form going into the World Cup will quickly be forgotten when the Three Lions kick off against Iran at lunchtime.

Gareth Southgate’s men were relegated from the top tier of the Nations League after picking up just three points from six games.

But England legend Shearer, 52, is confident that bad run will not affect their chances of glory in Qatar.

He said: “Forget about form. Get a result today and confidence starts flowing.

“One of the good things about Gareth is he has created a great atmosphere. Today is key, get the win and you never know.

“It will be tough but I expect us to win and I expect us to win the group.”

Dragons ready to roar

Skipper Gareth Bale is ready to lead Wales in a “massive piece of history” later today.

The Dragons will take part in their first World Cup match for 64 years when they face the United States in their Group B opener this afternoon.

And Bale, 33, cannot wait to sperhead the charge. He said: “It’s probably the biggest honour we could have for our country, qualifying for a World Cup, something we haven’t done in 64 years.

“It’s a massive piece of history in our country and something we have all wanted for a long time.

“We have the support of the nation back home, no matter what happens. As long as we give 100%, our country will love us for that.”

Silver lining

Erin Cuthbert believes missing out on Euro 2022 was a blessing in disguise because it gave her the opportunity to nail down her preferred role at Chelsea.

Cuthbert’s Scotland missed out on the tournament after finishing third in their qualifying group and had to watch from home as England went on to win the trophy at Wembley earlier this year.

The 24-year-old ace was disappointed not to take part but claims not being involved in the summer allowed her to focus on a more permanent move to central midfield.

After scoring the second goal in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Tottenham yesterday, she said: “I’m probably in the best place, best shape I’ve ever been.

“Last December, during the season, I kind of got thrown in there but didn’t really have a lot of time to work on it.

“But this pre-season it’s actually been a blessing with the Euros [not] happening for me. I had a lot of one-to-one time to actually kind of solidify and nail down that position and get to know the ins and outs of it.

“When there’s less people here you can have more one-on-one time with the staff and that was really important.”
