Robinson questions keeping Kane on

Paul Robinson has criticised England manager Gareth Southgate for not substituting Harry Kane at half-time of the World Cup victory over Iran.

The Three Lions captain is set for a scan on his ankle after picking up a knock in the second half of the 6-2 win, in which he claimed two assists.

Kane was hit by a tough tackle in the 48th minute and stayed down momentarily, sparking concerns over his fitness ahead of England’s second group game against USA.

With Southgate’s men already 3-0 up and cruising at half-time of the Iran clash, former goalkeeper Robinson believes Kane should have been withdrawn to avoid risking a potential absence for their key man.

Robinson, 43, said: “There was an injury scare with him. I think Southgate should have brought him off at half-time, in all honesty.

“It was 3-0. There was no way back for Iran. The game was done and dusted.

“There should have been more substitutions at the break. Southgate should have rested players and given players minutes that needed them.

“There was no need to risk Harry Kane. There was talk of him being tired or fatigued ahead of the tournament so why not give him a rest?

“The game was done. Why risk him for the second half? That said, Kane was excellent. There was no sign of fatigue from him or any of the England players.”

USA not intimidated by England

Tyler Adams insists USA are not intimidated by England ahead of Friday’s Group B clash.

The Three Lions outlined why they are one of the tournament favourites with their impressive introduction against Iran, while the Americans were held to a 1-1 draw with Wales.

Stars and Stripes captain and Leeds midfielder Adams, 23, said: “We are eager to bounce back and now have the opportunity to do that against a good team.

“We are not intimidated. We know how much quality they have.

“I have had the opportunity to play against a lot of them in the Premier League this year but we have a good team as well.”

Gregg Berhalter’s side impressed for large parts of their clash with the Dragons, only to be pegged back late on.

They went ahead in the first half through Timothy Weah, who cleverly poked home following a wonderful driving run by Chelsea star Christian Pulisic.

On Pulisic, Adams added: “He is an unbelievable player.

“What you saw on the goal, he is probably the only player on the field that can set that play up.

“That is a glimpse of what he can do. He is super talented and he is going to be a huge, integral part for us moving forward.”
