Sterling boost for England
England forward Raheem Sterling is to return to Qatar ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final with France.
Sterling, 28, flew back to England prior to the Three Lions’ 3-0 last-16 win over Senegal following a break-in at his family home in Surrey.
The Chelsea winger’s spokesperson said he left the camp to “prioritise the wellbeing” of his family.
But he is now expected to rejoin the squad in Al Wakrah on Friday, boosting his hopes of being able to feature in their blockbuster showdown with Les Blues.
Fifa ‘saddened’ by migrant worker death
Fifa says it is “deeply saddened” following the death of a migrant worker at a World Cup facility in Qatar.
A Filipino national fell to his death while carrying out repairs at a resort used as a training base by the Saudi Arabian team.
The tournament’s supreme committee said the worker was “not working under his remit” and the incident took place “on property not under its jurisdiction.”
A statement from world football’s governing body said: “Fifa is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and sympathies are with the worker’s family.
“Fifa will be in a position to comment further once the relevant processes in relation to the worker’s passing have been completed.”
