Tell it like it is

Jamie Redknapp has rubbished talk of England’s World Cup campaign being one to be proud of.

The former midfielder, 49, was not impressed with what he saw as the Three Lions were knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual runners-up France.

And he believes Gareth Southgate’s men missed a golden opportunity to go all the way in Qatar.

Writing in his Sky Sports column, Redknapp said: “I don’t subscribe to this feeling that England had a really good World Cup.

“Getting to the quarter-finals wasn’t a big achievement and I don’t think we should be celebrating it. We could have done a lot more with the squad and the depth we have.

“When I look at France and Argentina in the World Cup final, you think it could have been us.

“Argentina are a very good side but not out of this world. Lionel Messi gave them a point of difference and was the reason they won.

“We haven’t got that killer instinct in our team, we’re a nice football team. We have tremendous young players and we have come close, but that’s where the frustration is.

“I look at the two teams who got to the final… we’re every bit as good as them.”

Redknapp also believes any talented manager could enjoy the success Southgate has experienced in charge of the national team.

The ex-Liverpool and Tottenham star added: “He has done a decent job. But we shouldn’t be thinking that there isn’t anyone else out there.

“There will be a lot of good managers who would do an equally good job.

“Any young, English, Premier League manager worth their salt would have gotten England to the quarter-finals, when you look at the teams we’ve played.”

In the running

England star Beth Mead is the leading contender to scoop the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

Arsenal striker Mead, 27, was awarded the Golden Boot and named Player of the Tournament as Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses won Euro 2022 in the summer.

And she is now the favourite to land the Beeb’s prestigious gong, which will be voted for by the public tomorrow night.
