Keane: City win could be Reds’ turning point

Manchester United legend Roy Keane believes Liverpool’s narrow win over Manchester City will be a turning point for the Merseysiders.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have endured a difficult start to the campaign and were on a three-game winless run in the league prior to yesterday’s victory.

But they beat rivals City 1-0 thanks to Mohamed Salah’s strike in a pulsating clash at Anfield.

Keane, 51, said: “I think it was a big lift for the club. The players and the manager have been heavily criticised since the start of the season and rightly so because they’ve not been performing to the high standards they’ve set over the last few years.

“It could be a turning point for them. It was the way they won the game.

“I don’t think it was necessarily great quality from both teams. There was an edge, intensity. There were question marks over the team over the last week or two.

“The way they got over the line was pretty ugly. Salah had a chance just before that. But then the goal he scores, great finish, shocking defending from Man City.

“I think it is more than three points.”

The Reds are back in action on Wednesday night as they welcome West Ham to Anfield.

De Gea thrilled with landmark clean sheet

David de Gea was thrilled after he marked his 500th appearance for Manchester United with a clean sheet.

The Red Devils were unable to find a winner in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle as they drew for the first time in Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Before the game Alex Ferguson presented De Gea, 31, with a special award and he felt it was a well-earned shutout on the day.

“[I’m] so, so happy. Proud to reach 500 games, especially with a clean sheet,” De Gea said.

“[It] could be better if we score one goal, but the feeling is great.

“Newcastle have been playing really good football, scoring goals, so to keep a clean sheet today is big for us.

“If you cannot win the game then keep a clean sheet and at least we have one point, but I think if we want to finish in the top places in the table we have to win those games.”

And after his 170th clean sheet for the club, De Gea felt it was apt for Ferguson to hand him his award.

He said: “It was the right person to give me the award. He brought me to the club, he trusted me and believed in myself so it was great to be there at Old Trafford, a full Old Trafford with Sir Alex and it was a great moment”

United will want to get back to winning ways when they host Tottenham on Wednesday night.
