In good Kompany

Mikel Arteta’s success at Arsenal is no surprise to old pal Vincent Kompany.

The duo worked together at Manchester City when Arteta was Pep Guardiola’s assistant and the Belgian was marshalling his defence.

And Kompany, who has led Burnley to the Championship summit this season, is delighted to see Arteta flourishing.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s top-of-the-table clash between the Gunners and City, the Clarets boss said: “I’m not surprised he’s been doing well with Arsenal.

“He’s definitely going to continue doing well, there’s no doubt about that.

“He’s got the energy and especially the resilience to deal with setbacks and keep going, draw his own conclusions and improve. That’s why I think he’s doing so well with Arsenal.”

Bad goals to concede

Conor Coady admits Everton shot themselves in the foot during last night’s 2-0 defeat at Liverpool.

After beating Premier League leaders Arsenal in their last outing, the relegation-haunted Toffees went to Anfield in high spirits under new boss Sean Dyche.

But goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, both of which were scored on the counter, cost them dear.

Centre-back Coady, 29, said: “We have lost the game and need to look at where we have lost it. We gave away two goals on the counter and that is massively disappointing.

“We were a bit nervy in the first half, we tried to play more in the second half and to say we lost the game is hard.

“This is the Premier League and people will change things to try and eradicate the good things you did in your last game.

“It is important we keep listening to the manager each day and we need to go again.”

Off the mark

Cody Gakpo was delighted to open his Liverpool account at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp’s men picked up a welcome three points against neighbours Everton.

Up until last night, the Dutch striker had failed to find the net for the Reds in six appearances since joining from PSV Eindhoven last month.

But he got back on the goal trail last night to seal Liverpool’s victory after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring.

Gakpo, 23, said: “It feels amazing to get my first goal in this game — also an important one. I’m really happy.

“It was amazing. Obviously for a striker it’s always nice to score and then also in a derby is a really great feeling.

“It was a good pressing situation from us. Robbo [with a] good one-two with Hendo, Mo on the ball, a good cross, little deflected, but I was there at the second post.”
