– Man Utd have won their last two home games with clean sheets
– Sevilla lost without scoring at PSV and Fenerbahce in the previous two rounds
– Recommended bet: Back Man Utd to win to zero
Manchester United’s quest for a second piece of silverware continues on Thursday when the Red Devils host Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-final first leg.
It will be their sixth straight fixture against Spanish opposition in this season’s competition, Erik ten Hag’s men having already beaten Real Sociedad in the final game of the group stages before overcoming Barcelona and Real Betis in the last 32 and last 16 respectively.
No team can rival Sevilla’s record in this competition, although the six-time champions’ domestic form has been shaky.
Jose Luis Mendilibar, who became Los Nervionenses’ third head coach of the campaign when he replaced Jorge Sampaoli last month, saw his side reduced to nine men in a 2-2 LaLiga draw with Celta Vigo on Friday.
Team news
Marcus Rashford succumbed to injury after scoring and assisting in United’s 2-0 home win over Everton at the weekend and he has been ruled out for a few game, while Luke Shaw remains on the sidelines.
Casemiro can play for the first time since the Red Devils’ 1-0 win over Sevilla’s rivals Real Betis, but Alejandro Garnacho, Tom Heaton and Donny van de Beek are all sidelined through injury.
For Sevilla, on-loan United full-back Alex Telles can face his parent club, but Pape Gueye is not registered for this competition and Joan Jordan is missing through injury.
The stats
United’s last five European campaigns have all been brought to an end by Spanish clubs with Sevilla starting that run in 2017-18.
Red Devils striker Martial spent the second half of last season on loan at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, scoring one goal in 12 appearances in all competitions.
Sevilla have failed to score in their last four away Europa League ties, including both of their road trips this season.
Los Nervionenses have lost five of their last seven away games in total, scoring just four goals and conceding 15 across that span.
Prediction
Losing Rashford is a huge blow to United, particularly at Old Trafford where he has scored 19 of his 28 goals this term, but Ten Hag has been very good at finding solutions to problems that could easily have tripped his side up this season.
Although Sevilla have a fine reputation in this competition, the current crop are not in the class of Barcelona, Real Sociedad or Real Betis, who have all been beaten by the Red Devils this season.
The LaLiga outfit survived second-leg scares against PSV Eindhoven and Fenerbahce to reach the last eight after establishing solid leads at the Sanchez Pizjuan.
This time, they play away first, and it would be a surprise if Mendilibar’s side were able to take a goal back to Spain for the second leg.
