Pre-season round-up: United in late collapse, Kane at the double

Manchester United’s perfect pre-season record came to an end after a late collapse saw them draw 2-2 with Aston Villa.

Tottenham, meanwhile, triumphed 2-1 over Rangers, with Harry Kane playing a starring role.

A collection of other Premier League clubs also took to the field as they continued their off-season preparations, with Crystal Palace, Wolves and Brighton among the few to claim victories.

Manchester United 2-2 Aston Villa

United boss Erik ten Hag named another strong side in pursuit of continued perfection and, initially, the Red Devils looked set to continue their winning streak.

Jadon Sancho opened the scoring with his third pre-season goal in just four games, continuing his promising form so far.

A Matty Cash own goal ensured the Red Devils went into the break two goals up, but they were unable to hold on to their lead.

Shortly after the restart, Leon Bailey halved the deficit to hand Steven Gerrard’s men a lifeline.

It looked as though United had eked out another win as the game drew to a close, but defender Calum Chambers grabbed a rare goal in the 93rd minute to snatch a draw for Villa.

Rangers 1-2 Spurs

Tottenham picked up their second win in three pre-season outings with a 2-1 victory over Rangers.

Having beaten a K-League XI 6-3 and drawn 1-1 with Sevilla, Antonio Conte picked a strong starting line-up — just three players removed from the final-day 5-0 win over Norwich.

Kane was once again the star of the show, scoring both his side’s goals in the space of six second-half minutes to cancel out Antonio Colak’s opener for the Scottish side.

The England captain has now scored five times in just three pre-season games and appears to be playing himself into form ahead of the start of the season.
