Premier League Matchday 14: Potter makes Brighton return

Graham Potter’s first trip back to Brighton as Chelsea boss headlines a busy weekend of Premier League action.

There are eight games on Saturday with four of the top five in action, before leaders Arsenal and Manchester United both play on Sunday.

We have all of the Matchday 14 games previewed.

Leicester vs Manchester City (Saturday, 12.30pm, BT Sport 1)

Expect plenty of action as champions Manchester City travel to Leicester looking to keep up the pressure on table-toppers Arsenal.

There have been 47 goals in City’s Premier League games so far this campaign and 45 in the Foxes’, the two highest totals in the division this term.

While the hosts have scored more goals (17) against City since Pep Guardiola took charge then any other top-flight side, they have lost nine of their past 11 league games against the Citizens and sit just one place above the relegation zone.

And Brendan Rodgers’ men have to try and keep Erling Haaland quiet — Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Norwegian record of 18 goals in a single Premier League season is under threat, with the summer signing already netting 17.

Bournemouth vs Tottenham (Saturday, 3pm)

Three defeats in their past five league games combined with difficulties in Europe mean all eyes are on Antonio Conte’s Tottenham as they head to Bournemouth.

The Italian coach has only lost once in 19 Premier League games against promoted sides and will hope it is feast rather than famine for Spurs on the South Coast.

In their five previous visits to the Vitality Stadium, the North Londoners have failed to score three times, won 5-1 once and 4-1 on the other occasion.

Harry Kane just loves playing the Cherries too, with seven goals in eight games, including his first away hat-trick in the top flight back in October 2015.

Brentford vs Wolves (Saturday, 3pm)

After both shipping four goals last weekend, Brentford and Wolves will be desperate to put those results behind them in West London.

The Bees’ home form has been good this term with 11 points from their six games, while no side has kept more clean sheets on their own patch (three).

Wolves have struggled on the road in recent times with eight defeats and two draws in their past 10 games, it is also 15 league matches since they last netted more than once.

The last time they had scored five goals in their opening 12 top-flight games they were relegated back in 1981-82 and interim boss Steve Davis knows his side must find their scoring boots sooner rather than later.

Brighton vs Chelsea (Saturday, 3pm)

Graham Potter returns to the Amex as Chelsea manager just seven weeks after quitting Brighton for the Blues.

The Seagulls have never recorded a league win against the West Londoners and are yet to take the lead in any of their 10 Premier League meetings.

And it has not been an easy start for Potter’s successor Roberto De Zerbi, who is winless in five games since taking over.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have drawn their last two league outings but will be buoyed by a 2-1 win at FC Salzburg last Tuesday, their sixth victory in nine games under Potter.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton (Saturday, 3pm)

Home comforts will be welcomed by Patrick Vieira as his Crystal Palace team look for a third consecutive victory at Selhurst Park.

But South London has been a happy hunting ground for Southampton, who have won six of their last 10 away meetings with the Eagles.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is constantly under pressure at St Mary’s but a 1-1 draw against Arsenal last time out means they head into this clash on a three-game unbeaten run.

While Palace lost 3-0 at Everton last Saturday, they will take confidence from the fact they have only lost more than one game in a row twice in Vieira’s reign.

Newcastle vs Aston Villa (Saturday, 3pm)

Set to take the reins at Aston Villa next Tuesday, newly-appointed boss Unai Emery will be an interested observer at Newcastle.

The Spaniard rejected the chance to manage the Magpies before Eddie Howe was eventually hired a year ago.

Howe has guided the Tynesiders to their best start to a top-flight season in 11 years with 21 points from 12 games, while they have the best defence in the league with only 10 goals conceded.

Villa will head north full of confidence though, after smashing Brentford 4-0 under the guidance of caretaker manager Aaron Danks following Steven Gerrard’s sacking.

Fulham vs Everton (Saturday, 5.30pm, Sky Sports)

Fulham continue to make light of pre-season relegation predictions and head into their home clash with Everton sitting seventh.

They have scored three times in both of their last two games and have found the net in all six of their matches at Craven Cottage, after firing blanks in 12 of 19 games in their last top-flight campaign.

It is the first time Marco Silva will manage against Everton since he left the club three years ago — and he has lost both his previous games against the Toffees.

But with the Merseysiders only notching two league away wins under Frank Lampard’s tenure, Silva will be confident of ending that record.

Liverpool vs Leeds (Saturday, 7.45pm, Sky Sports)

It could be last chance saloon for Leeds boss Jesse Marsch as the Whites make a daunting trip to Liverpool.

A dismal run of two points from their past eight matches has heaped the pressure on Marsch with fans voicing their discontent in recent games.

While the Reds lost 1-0 to bottom side Nottingham Forest last weekend, they have netted 10 goals in two home games against Leeds since the West Yorkshire outfit returned to the top flight.

Mohamed Salah has scored five of those strikes and this term has created more chances from open play (28) than any other Premier League player.

Arsenal vs Nottingham Forest (Sunday, 2pm)

After being dumped out of the FA Cup by then Championship side Nottingham Forest last January, revenge is on the cards for Arsenal.

It is the first league meeting since the Gunners won 1-0 at the City Ground back in 1999 and only two of 40 teams to play at the Emirates in the top flight have won on their first trip there.

Though they have won their last 10 home games in all competitions, Mikel Arteta’s side are without victory in their last two outings after they followed up a 1-1 draw at Southampton with a 2-0 loss at PSV Eindhoven on Thursday night.

Forest, on the other hand, beat Liverpool 1-0 last time out and are eyeing back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since their promotion.

Manchester United vs West Ham (Sunday, 4.15pm, Sky Sports)

Fresh off the back of home wins in Europe on Thursday, Manchester United and West Ham do battle to round off the Premier League weekend.

Hammers boss David Moyes has not enjoyed fixtures against his former club, with each of the past four league encounters ending with three points for the Red Devils.

United have only failed to win one of their last 14 Premier League home games, while the Hammers have lost 10 on the road in the same time frame.

Consistency has been the key for United with only Brighton (five) and Arsenal (10) making fewer than the 16 changes Erik ten Hag has made to his starting line-ups so far this term.
