Stat Attack: All you need to know about Brentford 2-1 Watford

Bryan Mbeumo‘s stoppage-time penalty completed a sensational Brentford comeback to defeat Watford 2-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Emmanuel Dennis continued his fine goalscoring form by heading home from a Tom Cleverley corner to give the Hornets a first-half lead.

Despite dominating possession, Thomas Frank’s side looked unable to break down a resilient Watford defence.

However, with just six minutes remaining, Brentford captain Pontus Jansson headed in at the far post — his first goal for the Bees.

The comeback was then completed in the last minute of stoppage time, when Mbeumo dispatched from the penalty spot after William Troost-Ekong brought down Saman Ghoddos.

Hornets manager Claudio Ranieri cut a disappointed figure at full-time. He said: “Our opponent deserved to win, they worked really hard.

“The boys knew how badly I wanted the second goal, it didn’t happen. We were a little nervous today and we made a lot of mistakes.

“We made passing mistakes, we made mistakes all over the pitch. I don’t understand why, we just have to keep working.”

Meanwhile, Frank was delighted with his side’s performance. He stated: “It’s crazy. That’s what football means, these are the moments when we work, we try to achieve.

“We didn’t settle for a draw. We just attacked and it reflected our mentality on the field. The guys were patient throughout the game, they were great.

“With increasing injuries, endless Covid cases, it was an incredible win. It feels great to be able to perform like this in this situation”

Jansson ended a run of 93 games without a goal in all competitions.

Mbeumo’s penalty goal for Brentford, in the 95th minute, was the latest winning goal in a Premier League game since September.
