Stat Attack: All you need to know about Burnley 1-3 Aston Villa

Burnley suffered a blow in their fight for survival following a 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa at Turf Moor.

Danny Ings opened the scoring for the visitors against his former club, slotting calmly into the bottom corner after being played through by Emiliano Buendia.

Buendia then got on the scoresheet himself with a low, deflected drive in the 31st minute after Lucas Digne cut the ball back from the left.

Ollie Watkins added gloss to the scoreline shortly after the break, heading John McGinn’s floated cross firmly down and past Nick Pope.

Maxwel Cornet raced in behind to grab a consolation in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late for the hosts, who remain two points clear of the drop zone but have played two more games than 18th-placed Everton.

Did you know?

This was Burnley’s 100th defeat in the Premier League since returning to the competition in 2016-17. They are one of only three teams to lose 100 games in that time, along with Crystal Palace and Watford (both exactly 100).

Ings became only the second player to score in four consecutive Premier League appearances against a team he’s previously played for in the competition (Burnley), along with Craig Bellamy against Newcastle between 2007 and 2011.

In the last three seasons, Ings has scored seven Premier League goals against teams he’s previously played for in the competition (four against Burnley, two against Liverpool, one against Southampton), more than any other player has scored against former sides in that time.

Watkins is one of only nine players who have scored 10 or more goals in each of the last two Premier League seasons (10 this season, 14 in 2020-21) and one of only four Englishmen, along with Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Raheem Sterling.

Buendia scored and assisted in a Premier League game for the first time in his 67th appearance in the competition (36 for Norwich, 31 for Villa).
