Goalkeepers Vicente Guaita and Nick Pope stole the show as Newcastle and Crystal Palace played out a goalless draw at St James’ Park.
The hosts thought they had taken the lead after Tyrick Mitchell inadvertently headed into his own net but the goal was later chalked off for a foul in the build-up.
The Magpies pushed throughout but were unable to find the net, with Miguel Almiron striking against the woodwork and Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock and Alexander Isak all calling Guaita into action.
Palace posed a threat of their own as Pope was forced to deny Jean-Philippe Mateta and Odsonne Edouard but both goalkeepers were up to the task and kept their respective clean sheets.
Willock, who was penalised for a foul in Newcastle’s disallowed goal, felt the Magpies should have won the game.
He said: “We had loads of chances and we have to put them away. We have to be clinical when you have a team by the scruff of the neck.
“I believe it should have been a goal [which was disallowed]. The ball came across and I thought I got pushed in the back. Very disappointing.
“We have to just focus on what we can control. We have a brilliant team and a manager. We have to look ahead to the next game. We have to stay positive. It was good performance.”
Palace defender Joachim Andersen admitted the performance was not their best but picked out the positives from their display.
He said: “It was really intense from the first to the last minute. So much stress on the pitch. It was a good game for people to see, with lots of chances at both ends.
“It is always tough to come here, a difficult atmosphere. It was not our best game with the ball but the way we defended and the resilience we showed was fantastic.
“We need to see out these games. If we don’t win, we need to make sure we don’t lose.
“I feel good. We had a decent start and are unlucky not to have more points. We need to get better every game.
“It is about keeping going and be more mature in our game. When to be nice and when to play dirty. This was a good step in that direction, seeing out a difficult game.”
