Newcastle claimed a vital 2-1 win over Brighton to move seven points clear of the drop zone at St. James’ Park.
The hosts were ahead after just 12 minutes when Ryan Fraser pounced after Jacob Murphy’s shot had struck the woodwork.
Eddie Howe’s side doubled their advantage two minutes later when Fabian Schar headed in from Fraser’s free-kick.
Brighton set up a nervy end when Lewis Dunk headed a goal back in the second half.
But the hosts were able to hold on to extend their unbeaten run to eight games.
