Everton missed the chance to extend their gap over the relegation zone to seven points, losing 2-0 to Southampton at St. Mary’s.
The Toffees were lucky to make it to half-time with scores level, with Jordan Pickford facing six shots on target but managing to repel each one — though his teammates were only able to muster one in reply before the break.
Southampton made their dominance pay in the 52nd minute as Stuart Armstrong placed a low effort inside the near post after being found by Che Adams’ square pass.
The hosts doubled their lead with five minutes remaining as substitute Shane Long rose above Seamus Coleman to nod a right-wing cross down and past a helpless Pickford.

Southampton have won four of their last eight league games (D3 L1), as many victories as they managed in their previous 20 games in the English top-flight (D8 L8).
Everton’s haul of 22 points from their first 23 games in the Premier League this season is their worst tally at this stage of a top-flight campaign since 1950-51 (in the three-points-for-a-win era), when they also had 22 and were relegated at the end of the season.
Southampton ended a run of 13 league games without a clean sheet, keeping their first top-flight shut-out since a 1-0 win over Aston Villa in November.
Armstrong netted his first goal in his last 20 Premier League games, since scoring against Burnley in April 2021.
Since the start of 2020-21, Adams has been directly involved in 22 Premier League goals for Southampton (15 goals, seven assists), with James Ward-Prowse the only Saints player with more in that time (25).
Long bagged his first league goal since February 2020 (against Aston Villa), ending a run of 799 minutes without scoring in the league.
