– Sunday’s games see 2018 runners-up Croatia in action while Germany face a massive Spanish test
– Canucks can deny Croatia
– Spain could end Germany hopes
Our daily Bet Builder column continues with selections from Sunday’s World Cup fixtures, which include Spain’s crucial matchup with Germany along with Canada’s clash against Croatia.
Canucks can provide shock
Bet 1: Back Canada or draw double chance
Canada performed well in their opener, falling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium that was largely due to poor finishing, some questionable refereeing decisions and a missed penalty.
They managed 22 shots on the Belgian goal and showed why they topped the CONCACAF qualifying group for this year’s tournament.
John Herdman’s side are good off-the-ball and may be able to utilise that against a Croatia side who underperformed in their opener, managing just six shots in a goalless draw with Morocco.
If Canada can back up their performance from the opening game they should be able to pick up their first ever World Cup points.
Bet 2: Back Jonathan David to score at anytime
Jonathan David took seven of Canada’s 21 shots in their opening match against Belgium and amassed an expected goals tally of one.
While he did not find the net on that occasion, his goalscoring record for club and country indicates he may be worth supporting to do so in this game.
David has 22 goals in 36 games for his nation and has also netted nine times in 15 games for Lille this season in the French top flight.
Given Alphonso Davies’ penalty miss, David may also return to spot-kick duties and is fancied to get on the scoresheet.
Bet 3: Back over 2.5 goals
Four of Canada’s last seven games have seen three or more goals and this could be another high-scoring affair.
If the Canucks, who amassed 2.4 expected goals without scoring in their first match, can improve their finishing they should contribute to a competitive affair that could turn into a goalfest.
Die Mannschaft look vulnerable
Bet 1: Back Spain to win
After their shock 2-1 loss to Japan, Germany are left in the uncomfortable position of needing a probable victory against Spain to keep their hopes of progression to the knockout stages alive.
With Japan likely to beat Costa Rica, Hansi Flick’s men may be forced to force the issue against Spain and leave themselves open at the back.
La Roja netted seven in their opener against Costa Rica and the recent head-to-head record does not make good reading for Germany, who have won just one of the last seven meetings between the pair.
Bet 2: Back Ferran Torres to score
Ferran Torres netted twice in the opening match against Costa Rica and could follow that up with another against Germany.
The Spaniard’s pace will be key as his side looks to hit their opponents on the counter and he is also on penalty duties for Luis Enrique’s team so looks to have a solid chance of finding the net once more.
Bet 3: Back Joshua Kimmich to receive a card
With the possibility of Germany leaving themselves open at the back as they try to pick up a victory here, Joshua Kimmich could be responsible for trying to stop Spanish counter attacks in midfield.
The 27-year-old has three bookings for Bayern Munich this season and is fancied for another against a tricky Spanish midfield containing exciting youngsters Gavi and Pedri and wily veteran Sergio Busquets.
