Arsenal are prepared to shell out £42million to bolster their midfield with Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
The Serbian is a long-term Manchester United target and has also attracted interest from Serie A rivals Juventus in recent weeks.
Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport claim Lazio are holding out for £60m but the Gunners will test the waters with a lesser bid as Mikel Arteta looks to add a world-class option to his engine room.
Milinkovic-Savic, 27, managed an impressive 22 goal contributions in 37 Serie A outings from central midfield last season and has been a prized asset since arriving from Belgian side Genk in 2015.
He has six goals in 33 caps for Serbia and would bring a wealth of experience, physicality and technical quality to the Gunners.
Arsenal are determined to add options in the centre of the park this summer with Leicester star Youri Tielemans another player on their radar.
The Belgian looks set to leave the Foxes and the Telegraph claim Arteta is plotting a £25m swoop for the playmaker.
Arsenal’s transfer plans will be hampered by the fact they lost out on Champions League football to North London rivals Tottenham on the final day of the season.
But the Gunners remain an attractive proposition and Arteta has made progress in returning them to the top of English football after years of struggles.
