Transfer Talk: Man Utd confident of sealing De Jong deal despite wage row

Manchester United are confident of bringing Frenkie de Jong to the Premier League despite a wage row with Barcelona.

Erik ten Hag is keen to reunite with the Dutchman, 25, at Old Trafford after making him the focal point of his Ajax side.

Reports in Spain have suggested the switch is at risk because Barca want United to pick up a £24million tab for unpaid wages after De Jong took a reduced package during the pandemic.

And there have also been questions asked about the playmaker’s desire to leave LaLiga for the Red Devils.

But the Sun claim club chiefs believe their £71m swoop is still on the right track after chief executive Richard Arnold and director of football John Murtough flew to Barcelona for talks.

United completed their second piece of summer business yesterday as Christian Eriksen signed a three-year contract to join ex-Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia in the ranks.

And Ajax centre-back Lisandro Martinez is believed to be close to completing a £42m move as Ten Hag reshapes his squad.

Meanwhile, the Guardian claims Robert Lewandowski will finally join Barca from Bayern Munich this weekend after the club’s agreed a £42.5m fee.
