Transfer Talk: United plot double swoop for Gakpo and Palhinha

Manchester United are planning a double summer swoop for PSV Eindhoven ace Cody Gakpo and Sporting star Joao Palhinha.

United scouts have watched Gakpo in action on several occasions during a fine season for the 22-year-old where he has produced 13 goals and as many assists.

The Red Devils are expected in the market for a new striker with doubts surrounding the long-term futures of veterans Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

And the Mirror say they will make a move for Dutch international Gakpo on the recommendation of interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The club’s recruitment team most recently watched Gakpo in action during his side’s 1-0 Europa League victory over Maccabi Tel Aviv, in which he scored the winner.

And with United also still in the market for a defensive midfielder, Sporting’s Palhinha could also head to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old has impressed for the Primera Liga outfit this season and his exploits have also attracted the interests of Newcastle United.

Palhinha has just signed a new deal at the José Alvalade Stadium, though that appears to be more about Sporting protecting the value of their asset.

That deal, which runs until 2026, reportedly has a £50million release clause but the Portuguese champions are said to be open to offers north of £20m.
