Under The Spotlight: Owls eyeing up League One play-off spot

It promises to be a thrilling finale to the League One season with things still unclear at both the top and bottom ends of the table as we enter the final week of the campaign.

There are three crucial games taking place tonight that will have a big impact in the push for promotion and the fight to stay up.

League leaders Wigan are at Portsmouth, in-form Sunderland entertain second-place Rotherham while play-off hunting Sheffield Wednesday travel to Fleetwood.

Owls face Cod Army battle

The Owls are currently one point and one place outside the top six with two games remaining for Darren Moore’s men to claim a play-off spot.

This evening they travel to face a Fleetwood team teetering outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.

An 88th-minute equaliser saw the Cod Army snatch a point against AFC Wimbledon last time out but the task ahead remains an uphill one for Stephen Crainey’s squad.

Fleetwood have collected just one win in 19 — at rock-bottom Crewe — while their last home win was all the way back in January.

Wednesday, who beat Fleetwood 1-0 at Hillsborough last August, have lost just one of their last nine games — at Wycombe on Saturday.

Defender Jack Hunt will return to the squad after being rested at the weekend while Josh Windass — ruled out with injury since February — is pushing to be involved at Highbury Stadium.

Latics preparing promotion party

Wigan currently hold a three-point lead at the top of the table and know a point at Portsmouth will be enough to seal automatic promotion.

Leam Richardson has seen his side lose just seven of their 44 league matches while also boasting the best goal difference in the division.

The Lancashire club make the long trip to Fratton Park to face a Pompey team that have nothing to play for, having slipped out of the play-off race in recent weeks.

The hosts have won their last three on home soil but the Latics are unbeaten on the road since February 8 and should have enough to take at least a point.

The visitors look the way to go in the double chance market, especially when you consider they are seeking a league double over Danny Cowley’s men and won this fixture 2-1 last term.

Black Cats ready to pounce

Just when it looked like Sunderland would be spending another season in League One, the Black Cats have somehow conjured up an 11-game unbeaten run.

The latest win, a 5-1 thumping of Cambridge on Saturday, has seen Alex Neil’s men move up to fourth but they are still not guaranteed a play-off place.

The Mackems face a Rotherham team in the middle of bad patch. The Millers remain in second but face missing out on automatic promotion having collected just three wins in their last 10 league games.

It is the South Yorkshire club’s away form that is their biggest concern, with Paul Warne’s side picking up just two points from their last four on the road and failing to score in their last three away games.

A run of five wins in a row at the Stadium of Light makes excellent reading for the long-suffering home support, who are likely eyeing another trip to Wembley.
