Watford appoint Hodgson after axing Ranieri

Former England manager Roy Hodgson has been appointed as Claudio Ranieri’s successor at Watford.

Hodgson, 74, will take the role on a temporary basis until the end of the season and is joined by trusted lieutenant and ex-Hornets chief Ray Lewington.

The former Liverpool and Fulham boss retired at the end of last term following a successful four-year spell at Crystal Palace.

He takes charge of a Hornets side sitting 19th in the Premier League table, without a win in their last eight league games.

The Hertfordshire club parted ways with former manager Ranieri on Monday evening.

Hodgson’s first game in charge will be a crucial relegation battle against Burnley at Turf Moor.

A club statement read: “Watford are delighted to confirm the appointment of Roy Hodgson as the club’s manager.

“The ex-England national team boss is joined by his trusted assistant Ray Lewington, who managed the Hornets so admirably from 2002 until 2005.

“Hodgson and Lewington begin preparations immediately for Watford’s next Premier League fixture; away to Burnley on Saturday February 5.

“Welcome to Watford, Roy. And welcome back, Ray!”
