England kicked off their Women’s Euro 2022 campaign with three points thanks to Beth Mead’s first-half strike.
Arsenal star Mead, 27, took a pass from Fran Kirby on her chest before lifting the ball over Austria keeper Manuela Zinsberger to break the deadlock after 16 minutes.
And her 15th goal in 15 appearances for the Lionessess since the start of 2021 proved decisive as the hosts held on in front of a packed house at Old Trafford to open their Group A campaign with a precious win.
Speaking at full-time, the match-winner said: “This is beyond words. What an amazing night. It’s great to start the tournament with a win.”
The attacker faced an anxious wait after scoring as VAR checked the ball had crossed the goal line.
Mead added: “I was pretty sure it went over the line but you always doubt yourself when there’s a delay.”
