Beth Mead bagged a hat-trick as England stormed into the quarter-finals of Women’s Euro 2022 with a game to spare by hammering Norway 8-0.
Urged to be more ruthless following a narrow 1-0 win over Austria in their opening Group A fixture, the Lionesses went goal crazy at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.
The hosts broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when Georgia Stanway thumped home a penalty after Ellen White took a tumble in the box.
Lauren Hemp made it two just four minutes later when Mead squared the ball to her for a tap-in, while White made it 3-0 just before the half-hour mark.
Mead got her second goal of the tournament with a fine header from Hemp’s cross in the 34th minute and added another in the 38th minute courtesy of a dazzling solo effort.
Sarina Wiegman’s side were six goals to the good four minutes before the break when White converted a fine ball from Fran Kirby.
The Lionesses looked dangerous throughout and it came as little surprise when sub Alessia Russo headed home a Lucy Bronze cross to make it seven after 66 minutes.
But England were not finished there — and neither was Mead, who completed her treble nine minutes from time.
