England escaped with a precious point after being largely outplayed by USA in a ragged goalless draw.
The Three Lions entered the Group B contest as strong favourites having dismantled Iran in their opening encounter but were never at the races against their impressive opponents.
The Americans had much the better of the opening period, spurning several golden chances to take the lead.
Weston McKennie blazed a Timothy Weah cross over when unmarked, before Christian Pulisic hit the bar with a stinging drive that had England keeper Jordan Pickford well beaten.
Chelsea forward Pulisic, 24, also nodded a header wide under pressure with Mason Mount’s injury-time snapshot the only time England threatened in a tame first-half showing.
Gareth Southgate did not immediately shuffle his pack but after seeing little improvement after the break, introduced Jordan Henderson and Jack Grealish for the closing stages.
The latter gave England more impetus but chances remained at a premium — Harry Kane heading a last-minute free-kick wide for what would have been an underserved winner.
It is a point that means England will top their group with victory over Wales, with progression assured providing the Dragons do not triumph by a four-goal margin.
For USA, a crunch showdown with Iran awaits with victory for either side certain to see them into the last 16.
Both of Group B’s final games will be played at 7pm on Tuesday, November 29.
